Chinese Americans in the US mainstream culture are portrayed as stereotyped oth- er. Chinese American literature since its emergence has tried to resist the misrepresentation and to reconstruct the self. The representations of the self in Chinese American literature have under- gone different phases: from the early days of protest and self-Orientalization to the quest for identity and finally the deconstruction and reconstruction of Chinese Americans. The research from the postcolonial perspective reveals the complexity and politics of representation and the re- lationship between representation and power. The changes of the representations of Chinese A- mericans are the result of the competition and shifts of various powers. Reconstruction of the self is the strategy of resistance against the cultural hegemony of the U. S dominant culture.
