Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, written by contemporary British woman writer Jeanette Winterson, is a threatening work in terms of its subject matter and narrative form. Winterson in the novel blurs the line between autobiography and fiction by fusing facts with myths and fairy tales, and employing metafictional skills to uncover the fictive nature of the novel. Furthermore, by making parodies of the classic texts, the novel questions the validity of history and traditional values. Exhibiting the hallmarks of post- modernist fiction, this novel defies the traditional notions of narrative and the reader's role, demonstrating Winterson's writing creativity and her critique of mainstream ideology.
