The Humanitarian Engineering Minor Program (HEMP) implemented by Colorado School of Mines in 2003 was designed to cultivate a new cadre of engineers, who can carry out engineering design and service under the complicated across-culture and across-region circumstance. The HEMP attaches much importance to the "soft" respects of engineering education such as the spirit of service, the sensitivity to social contexts and the responsibility to society. There are some characteristics in this program such as definition of Humanitarian Engineering, curriculum setting and service learning, which can inspire engineering educators to think how to foster engineers who can contribute to the welfare of society.
