F. R. Leavis holds that the part of Gwendolen Harleth in Daniel Deronda is fascinating while the part of Daniel Deronda is awful. This article explores the novel in the light of Raymond Williams’ theory of structure of feeling, and points out that the two characters are the elaborate arrangement of George Eliot. The contrast of the two characters is the result of the clash of the two social values and mirrors the structure of feeling in the course of the industrialization in Britain.
