A Mercy,Toni Morrison＇s new novel,set in the New Continent in the 17th century,describes the living conditions of different races under slavery in the early colonial period.Based on a close examination of the history of this period presented in the novel,this paper discusses Morrison＇s meditations on the history and the present condition of the United States.Standing at a historical height,Morrison transcends race,revealing race and enslavement are not invariably linked,drawing our attention to self-identity and minority-identity and presenting the picture of an ideal home.
