A numerical study of single phase fluid flow and convective heat transfer in a vertical saturated porous annulus is presented ill this paper. Comparison of numerical simulation results and experimental data from other references shows that the numerical results including thermal dispersion and the wall effect agree well with the experimental data. The effects of the inertial term, thermal dispersion, variable properties, buoyancy, and particle diameter on the flow and heat transfer were then studied. It was found that for the conditions studied. the effect of thermal dispersion and variable porosity had to be considered. For Re.≥ 5, theflow inertia had nonnegligible influence on the flow field and local heat transfer coefficientnear the inlet (x/(r2 - r1 ) < 1). When Re.≥ 400, the flow inertia significantly influenced theoverall friction factor in the vertical porous annulus. The porous medium greatly enhanced the heat transfer coefficient while also sharply increasing the friction resistance.
