Magmatic evolution is a complicated physical chemical process.Although it can be qualitatively explained through petrological and geochemical studies,these explanations leave some questions unanswered.There are several different opinions about mechanisms of magma differentiation and formation of mini rhythm layerings in basic layered intrusions,the principal mechanisms proposed are gravitative accumulation(Wager,1939),in situ crystallization(Jackson,1961),rhythm nucleation(Goode,1976),and double diffusion convection(McBirney,1979).A reason for this uncertainty is that the understanding of convection in magma chambers is ambiguous.For an accurate understanding,it is important to determine possibility,patterns,and scales of convection quantitatively and reasonably.In this paper,we have propose a new method for analyzing fluid dynamic stability of magma in a chamber and for calculating velocity and scale of magma convection quantitatively from calculated fields of temperature,density and viscosity,using Panzhihua layered intrusion as an example.This study is helpful for analyzing both the formation of mini rhythm layering and the magma evolution of Panzhihua layered intrusion.
