Staring with the architecture of part 1 of ISO/IEC 14496 (MPEG-4 systems), this paper first presents the MPEG-4 architecture Secondly, technical description of the tools of the MPEG-4 standard is discussed in detail, including the object description framework, system decoding model and delivery multimedia integrate framework, binary format for scene description (BIFS), sync layer, visual object encoding and audio object encoding and so on Finally, discussions of some key features of MPEG-4 and its possible applications are given in the last part of this paper
