摘要
斯蒂文森虽然生活在维多利亚时期,却不完全认同当时社会的一些主流价值观。在其《岛上夜娱》的三篇短篇小说中,他呈现了不一样的白人形象和土著女性形象,颠覆了传统白人的优越感。在探索殖民者与被殖民者关系基础上,揭示了白人文明对土著人的压迫。虽然小说在某些方面仍被禁锢在当时社会的意识形态中,但考虑到社会传统对作家思想的影响,小说意义深远。
Although living in the Victorian Period, Stevenson didn＇t completely agree with some dominant val- ues of this period. In the three short stories in Island Nights＇ Entertainments, he presents very different ima- ges of the white and the lubra, overturning the racial pride of the white. By exploring the relationship be- tween the colonizer and the colonized, the works expose the oppression exerted upon the natives by the white civilization. Though the short stories are still confined by its time to some extent, they have profound mean- ing and are beyond the times considering the influences imposed upon individuals by the social tradition.
