Current college students have been called the "Internet generation" . While this label vividly highlights the technological advantages of this segment of the population, it overlooks the disparities of Internet use within this group. This study explores college students' differential Internet use through the construction of multimodal Internet use, which is arguably a better gauge of digital inequality. Rather than relying on traditional measures of user/non-user and information/entertainment uses, the study focuses on a broad scope of online activities and investigates them collectively. Results show that going online is a pro- gression with systematic differences between those who engage in more Internet activities and those with fewer activities. That is, the more modes of Internet activities people are engaged in, the more advanced uses they have. Nevertheless, the actual levels of multimodal Internet use are rather low and unevenly dis- tributed among college students. Monthly expense can significantly predict the level of multimodality, which in turn correlates with knowledge acquisition and civic participation. This reveals that, even within this somewhat homogeneous group, the socio-economic status of student's family still plays a vital role in their utilization of the Internet, and therefore has critical impact on their social inclusion. While previous research concludes that the type of Internet activities matters, this study suggests that it is the number of types, or the multimodality of Internet use, that matters in examining the potential inequality and its social consequences.
