Today(on March 27,2010),it is a great privilege and plea sure for me to attend the book launch of The Collected Essays in Commemoration of Li Yuanqing.Li's knowledge about the history of modern and contemporary Chinese music develop ment was profound and filled with his own passion. In his youth,he had already realized that a summary of historical ex periences and lessons was critical to the construction of the New China's music culture. So in early 1950's,when he just started his new mission in charge of the building of the Institute of Music Research,he listed the construction of the discipline of modern and contemporary Chinese music history as one of the major research subjects in the institute, and was later on engaged in the planning and instruction for the Exhibition Room of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Music History, the Exhi bition Room in Commemoration of Ni Er,and the Exhibition Room in Commemoration of Xian Xinghai, etc.Such exhibition rooms formed fine academic platforms on which a large number of precious historic data had been collected so as to promote the academic development, enlarge their influences both at home and abroad, and create an important base for the con struction and research of the young discipline of modern and contemporary Chinese music history. On March 7,1959,when he was presiding at a meeting of the compiling team to discuss the writing outlines for The Brief History of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Music,he made an important speech.According to a mimeographed copy pro vided by Feng Wenci,Li Yuanqing made the following remarks on the entire outlines:1)the book must be integrated on the whole with coordination between each chapter;2)it must have comprehensive opinions on music culture.Such elements as the love songs during the May 4th Movement, traditional music like Mei Lanfang's Peking Opera music,as well as the achieve ments of folk ballad artists should not be neglected;3)Special rules and experiences in terms of music should be emphasized;4)analysis of a composer should be over
