[Objective]The present study was conducted to select some new high quality varieties with better agronomic traits, strong disease resistance and suitability for planting in Southern China. [Method]A comparative analysis of some botanical, economic and yield characteristics and disease resistance of five Carica papaya L. hybrid lines (with large fruits) was performed by using papaya variety Suizhonghong 48 as control. [Result]The hybrid line 200919 showed better average single fruit weight (1.60 kg) and yield per plant (20.77 kg) compared to the other varieties. Its yield was the highest (46110 kg/ha) amongst all the varieties including control and the differences were found to be significant. It also showed better transverse diameter, soluble solid content, juice content and average per fruit weight compared to control. The yield of line 200915 and 200917 was 40530 and 39555 kg/ha, respectively, which was higher than the control, while the yield of line 200916 and 200918 were less than the control, however, the differences were not significant. All the 5 lines showed high resistance to papaya diseases. Line 200919 was not found susceptible at the preliminary investigation stage, and disease rate and disease index was only 4.2% and 0.8, respectively, at the later investigation stage. [Conclusion]Line 200919 showed the advantages of strong growth vigor, high yield, fine quality and resistance to papaya ringspot disease and may be recommended for further evaluation at different locations in Southern China.
