Buddist "Zhulin temple legends" are imitated and revised by both Taoism and Buddhism in classical fiction history after Tang and Song Dynasties. In addition, the popular fiction and operas in Ming and Qing dynasties are greatly influenced by Zhulin temple legends. The exploration of the origin of Zhulin temple legends reveals that their plot elements deeply originated from the Buddhist culture. The holy monks in the Zhulin temples are either Bodhisattva or Arhats, who assume human forms and spread the Buddha's law in the mortal world. The tem- ples are mainly located on remote mountains or in the middle of the sea, assuming a mysterious looming presence. The Zhulin temple legends aim to spread the Buddha's law and compensate for people's disappointment with worldly monks.
