摘要
《火山恋人》是一部历史题材小说,它以18世纪后半叶的那不勒斯为背景,描写了英国驻那不勒斯大使、大使夫人和英国海军上将的感情纠葛。苏珊.桑塔格在小说中塑造了凯瑟琳和埃玛两位女性人物形象,她们都是大使的妻子,但是有着天壤之别。本文对凯瑟琳和埃玛分别作了评述,并进行了比较,并从社会背景的角度分析了差异产生的原因。
The Volcano Lover, a historical novel written by Susan Sontag, has its setting in Naples in the later half of the nineteenth century. It depicts the entanglement among the British ambassador to Naples, his wife and the captain of the British Navy. Susan Sontag features two female characters, Katherine and Emma, who both are wives of the British ambassadors and lead a world of differences. The following article finds the differences, and analyses the reason of the differences from the perspective of social background.
