摘要
长期以来，学界一直以为近代中国最早诞生的一座博物馆是法国传教士韩伯禄神父于1868年创办的上海徐家汇自然博物院。本文通过相关文献资料的举证与分析，否定了这一观点。韩伯禄1868年到达上海后，并未立即着手创办徐家汇自然博物院，博物院的真正创办始于1872年8月。由于徐家汇自然博物院第二任院长柏永年的观点对社会产生的误导，致使“韩伯禄1868年创办徐家汇自然博物院”之说在国内流传甚广并一直延续至今。虽然徐家汇自然博物院专用院舍于1883年5月才建成使用，但有资料证实博物院的动植物标本至迟在1878年已对外展出。即便如此，可能英国皇家亚洲文会北中国支会（下简称亚文会）上海博物院的建立与开放都早于上海徐家汇自然博物院。
For quite a long time, the Shanghai Zi-ka-wei（Xujiahui） Museum of Natural History established in 1868 by a French missionary P. M. Heude was regarded as the first museum in modern China. According to the evidence provide from related documentation and the analysis based on those evidence, this artiele negated the opinion. When Father P. M. Heude arrived in Shanghai in 1868, he did not start to establish the Zi-ka-wei（Xujiahui） Museum of Natural History right away. The museum was actually initiated in August 1872. The misleading opinion was brought by the successor, Father P. Courtois and was passed from mouth to mouth. Although the construction was in use until May 1883, evidence showed that animal specimen and herbarium had already been exhibited by 1878. Despite this, the Shanghai Museum established by the North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1874 was founded and opened to the public much earlier than the Zi-ka-wei（Xujiahui） Museum of Natural History.
