The German writer Günter Grass emphasizes that he is both a writer and a citizen;thus he sees commitment and critique as his social mission. As a contemporary,a writer should resist the dominant Zeitgeist,he says. This is based on the recognition of the absurdity of our reality. It is a concept of reality which he has again and again attempted to expand and which prompts him to focus on the subconscious,on imaginations, dreams, and fantasies, which usually must be taken to encompass something visionary. In his view, myths and fairy tales have a certain creative dimension which helps to recognize truth. And with their help, the relationships between past, present and future(pasenture) can be produced anew amid rubble respectively in the smashed truth.
