Musica ficta which prevailed in the period of 14th and 15th centuries is a product of multi -voice music development and human psychological requirement and played a major role in the transition from church modes to system of major and minor modes. Utilizing methods of psychological experiments, this research attempts to investi- gate the musica ficta experienced by ancient people through the sense of today' s people in order to test the infer- ences about its originating conditions, causes and functions. Based on experimental results and analysis of musical conformation, this article further suggests that the historical role of musica ficta determined that it would be only provisional and experimental and its sound effect is not perfect for tonal hearing.
