Objective: To evaluate the preventive and therapeutic effect of therapy of softening hardness and dissipating mass for atherosclerosis. Methods: One hundred and thirty-two atherosclerosis patients were randomly divided into two groups. The control group (n=65) received Xuezhikang Tablet, and the treatment group (n=67) received the decoction of Xinmaikang Prescription, one dose per day. The treatment lasted 3 months. Results: No statistical significant difference of the total effective rate was found between two groups (P 〉 0.05). After treatment, serum levels of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)in the treatment group differed from those before treatment(P 〈 0.05). So did TG, TC, LDL-C in the control group(P 〈 0.05). The differences of TG, LDL-C, HDL-C were significant between two groups after treatment (P 〈 0.05). Significant or obviously significant differences of the intima-media thickness and plaques subsidence were found in both groups before and after treatment (P 〈 0.05). The difference of plaques subsidence was significant between two groups after treatment (P 〈 0.05). During the treatment, the differences of the incidences of cardiovascular event and rehospitalization were significant between two groups (P 〈 0.05). Conclusion: Xinmaikang can decrease blood lipid levels, and can alleviate atherosclerosis.
