In the essay Trotsky and the Wild Orchids,Richard Rorty got tongue-tied when he was asked,"what is the 'mission' or 'task' of contemporary philosophy?" The article begins with two questions.First, why Richard Rorty could not rise to that challenge? Furthermore, why,in his Democracy and Philosophy,he sacrificed "Morality" for "Freedom"——"that even if the typical character types of liberal democracies are bland calculating, petty, and unheroic, the prevalence of such people may be a reasonable price to pay for political freedom"?After that, through the perspective of Carl Schmitt,we can understand the seriousness of virtue and the importance of political philosophy by Strauss's reading of Carl Schmitt. Finally,we examine Carl Schmitt's political philosophy and keep watchful to the Roman,Schmitt,by throwing out the question again:"what is the mission of philosophy?"
