摘要
英国维多利亚时期的文化巨擘马修.阿诺德一向被视为文化守成的代表;但同时他又是绝对主张变革的。不过,阿诺德所希望的改革,绝不是简单地脱离历史和文化的根基,也不轻言甩掉历史、文化、情感和心理的包袱,而是在理智中慎思变革,在继承中大胆创新,在秩序中平稳推进。阿诺德的文化改革观,在今天这样一个倡言改革的时代仍富有启迪和借鉴意义。
Matthew Arnold, a British celebrity of culture in Victorian times, was an advocate of social reform, though he was regarded as one representative of cultural conservatives. However, the social reform that Arnold hankered after was neither one breaking away from historical and cultural base or one shaking off the his-torical, cultural, psychological and emotional burden, instead it was one deliberating on reform with rationality, daring to innovate while carrying on the tradition, advancing steadily and orderly. Arnold＇s ideas of reform through culture are still edifying to us when reform is widely discussed and practiced today.
