Through an analysis of multiple strands of China's and America's civilizational traditions this paper develops its argument for a world of plural and pluralist civilizations. It also offers a pointed critique of unitary views of civilization. Clashes between civilizations are the exception, intercivilizational encounters and transcivilizational engagements are the norm. The last three decades in the relations between Sinic and American civilizations offer ample evidence for this proposition. Far from building a better and more diverse world,Conservatives and Liberals in both West and East are seriously misguided in assuming that there exists one standard of civilization by which we can judge our conduct and measure our progress in a world marked by multiple modernities.
