Based on the pervious survey and bird-watching from 1999 to 2008, the knowledge of birds in Ebinur Lake grew quickly. The circuit expedition was conducted again from April to November 2009. The survey area is about 6608 km2 or more, including Alataw Pass, Bortala River, Jinghe Estuary, Kuitun River, Duck Bay, Ganjiahu, and about 20 stations of Lake Ebinur Nature Reserve (44°50' N, 82°50' E, elevation 189 m). Every month, line transects and group estimate methods were used to investigate avian resources. The results showed that there are 233 avian species in the region, belong- ing to 17 orders, 53 families and 128 genera, accounting for 55% of the total bird species in Xinjiang. According to the type of avifauna, 183 species belong to the Palaearctic realm, a few birds from the Oriental realm, and about 49 species from the both. A total of 8 new ornithological records in Xinjiang were listed, they are the night heron, lesser white-fronted goose, scaup, long-tailed duck, ringed plover, little stint, slender-billed gull, and buff-belled pipit. The population sizes as well as monthly changes were taken in around lake surveys. 103 875 birds were counted at a census in autumn. Some rare species lived in the reserve, e.g. the dalmatian pelican, black stork, white-headed duck, white-tailed and short-toed eagles, cranes, and relict gull. Ebinur Lake is an internationally important wetland for waterfowl.
