Objective To observe left heart echocardiographic changes in young men who had acclimatized completely to high altitude environment. Methods A total of 239 young male army officers and soldiers were divided into two groups:plain group( living at 1400 m altitude over half a year, n = 75 ) and high ahitude groups who had migrated to 3900 - 4700 m altitude at least one year( n = 164). A diasonography was employed to measure their left ventricular end diastolic diameter( LVEDD), left ventricular end systolic diameter( LVESD), percent fractional shortening of left ventricle ( LVFS), stroke volume ( SV ), pulsatility index (PI) and cardiac minute output (CO) of both groups. Results The LVEDD, LVESS and SV in high altitude group was very significantly lower than those in plain group (P 〈 0.01 ). However, the LVFS and PI in high altitude group was very significantly higher than those in plain group (P 〈 0. 01 ). Conclusion Long migration to high ahilude may slightly reduce left ventricular volume and SV, and increase CO of migrators.
