摘要
对英国经验主义的批判在威廉.詹姆斯的思想发展进程中至为重要。他认可英国经验主义的基本原则,但却无法接受它所导致的怀疑主义和联想主义。唯心主义对关系和整体性的重视使詹姆斯看到了英国经验主义的疏漏,而英国经验主义改革者对经验的重新阐释帮助他察觉到了经验主义和唯心主义共同的失足之处。詹姆斯认为,英国经验主义是经验原子主义,其根源在于对经验把握的不彻底性。这一批判不仅提供了一个考察经验主义的新视角,而且促成了一种新的哲学即彻底经验主义。
William James’ criticism of British empiricism is crucial in the development of his philosophy.He accepts the basic principles of British empiricism but refuses its skepticism and associationism.He sees the weak points in British empiricism through his notice of idealism’s emphasis on relationship and wholeness.The reinterpretation of experience by the reformists of British empiricism helps him see through the common defects of empiricism and idealism.William James holds that British empiricism is empiric atomism and its understanding of experience is not complete.William James’ criticism of British empiricism offers a new perspective for understanding empiricism and helps establish a new philosophy,that is,radical empiricism.
