Modern national crises gave a strong impetus to the reform of Chinese characters in line with the international trend. In this context, the Communist Party of China attached great political importance to Latinized new Chinese characters and worked hard to popularize the new characters in the revolutionary bases with the government forces. However, these efforts did not achieve the expected results. The rise and fall of new Chinese character movement reflected the evolution of theoretical thinking and social practice of the CPC in the 1930s and 1940s with regard to the issues of internationalization, nationalization and popular orientation. The failure of this movement was rooted in the shift of the CPC' s option from internationalization to nationalization, its tendency of de-Sovietism and the indifference and rejection from the masses.
