In October 2007, the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） initiated a project entitled ＂Roadmap for Strategic Research in Key Fields of Science and Technology in China through 2050＂. The project was proposed by Prof. Lu Yongxiang, the president of CAS, with the purpose of foreseeing the development of science and technology through the mid 21st century, so as to ensure CAS a leading role in meeting the demands of the nation＇s future development. The project covers 18 key fields in science and technology, of which space science, applications, and technology are included with particular emphasis.
