Thanks to Volkov's Testimony, much of the Chinese scholarship on Shostakovich to date has focused on his sufferings under Stalin and on the impact of ideological control on his composition. By reducing the complexity of music, power and politics to a single strand of tyrannical repression and covert resistance, this one dimensional focus has not only resulted in a poor understanding of the richness of Shostakovich' s mu'- sic but also led to an oversimplification of the operations of power- social, economic, and political-and artistic agency. Through a survey of Western studies of the former Soviet composer with a particular focus on the so- called "Shostakovich War", this essay attempts to restore the complexity of art and ideology under authoritari- an rule and argues for a more nuanced understanding of the dialectic relations between artistic creativity and political control.
