This paper studies the market structure of the U.S. commercial banks during the years between 2000 and 2008. The empirical results show that, although the number of U.S. commercial banks is very large, the market structure is in the state of monopolistic competition. Large banks and small banks use their comparative advantages respectly to provide different products and services in the segment markets. Market competition is not fierce. Assets in the U.S. banks are concentrating in big banks, and the market competition among big banks is lower than those among the small ones.
