The Japanese financial system has been restructured since the financial crisis in the 1990s. The development of direct financing, at least to some extent, has overcome the inefficiency of the traditional financing model and has improved the financial market vitality and the international competitiveness of domestic financial institutions. The persisting indirect financing, as well as the strengthened financial legislation, guarantees effective supervision on Japan's financial industry and financial products. The combination of innovation and regulation has important implications for the post - crisis reconstruction of the world's financial system.
