Objective: To investigate the current status how diabetic patients dispose their medical waste including insulin injection needles and blood glucose test papers in home-setting, and analyze the possible reasons and interventions. Methods: A self designed questionnaire was used to investigate the medical waste disposal status and needle-stick injury experience of 277 diabetic patients in home-setting. Results: Among of them, 96.47% patients put the needles and test papers into normal waste directly; only 3.5% patients put them in a capped container but mixed with normal waste at last; 43.61% patients and their family members had needle-stick injury experiences. The patients who had attended the health education program had better medical waste disposal behavior than the others. Conclusion: The medical waste of diabetic patients in home-setting has a lot of potential risk. They could pollute the environment, spread disease, and get patients and family members stick injury if managed inappropriately. We should strengthen health education to let the patients and medical staffs understand the risk of medical waste. We also should help them deal with medical waste correctly and standardize their medical waste disposal behavior at home.
