Howqua, which was the leading merchant of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton (now Guangzhou) in late Qing Dynasty, used to build gardens at Honam (now Henan), Fati (now Huadi) and some other places in Canton. While these gardens were meeting the Howqua family's demand of living a luxurious life, they were also the most important place of getting together for the Western traders or local literati during the foreign trade period of the Thirteen Hongs. Because of the distinctive style and artistry of these gardens, they became the representative of the Hong Merchants’ Gardens of Canton in late Qing Dynasty. This article tries to reveal the historical clues and art characteristics of Howqua’s gardens through utilizing Chinese and Western literature and historical materials, so as to make a contribution to the research of Hong Merchants’ Gardens or even the Lingnan Gardens.
