It is urged that the American public journalism, which arose in the early 80s of the 20th century,is not only a press reform, but also a social movement for improvement of American democracy. It is an "experimental" action which more focused on the U.S.journalism ideas and social thought changes in recent years.Based on this understanding,an attempt is made to combine the contemplation of history with a realistic analysis to reveal and analyze peoples conceptual differences and conflicts about the medias role, journalism idea and the concept of democratic participation in the course of the development of public journalism.
