摘要
所谓大学精神、大学文化以及大学管理,既是高深学问,也是日常生活;既要"做",也要"说",需要理论和实践的结合。1920年,作为北大"新潮丛书"之一出版的《蔡孑民先生言行录》,是一本颇为全面地收录了北京大学校长蔡元培的演讲及其言行传略的书。作为教育家和演说家的蔡元培,在各种场合反复阐明自己的大学理念:大学,不但传授学术,更有养成独立自由人格的义务。具体而言,即当以最基础的学术研究为中心,要在培养一批不以满足一己私利权欲为目的、真正潜心向学的专家学者,故强调高深学问、强调学与术的分别、强调思想自由、兼容并包,并认为这正是中国走向现代化的关键。而这些演讲由"声音"录为"文字"的时候,又体现了蔡元培在语言方面,对实用文和美术文分别的主张与实践。
The spirit, culture and management of university is either of theory and of daily life, and it requires a combination of theory and practice. As an educationist and an orator, Cai Yuanpei time and again expounded his own idea of a university. He argues that a university has the responsibility not only for passing on academics, but also for training independent and liberal personality. Specifically, it should take the basic academic researches as the center, to train a batch of true scholars who are not selfish but devoted themselves to academic works. He takes that, therefore, the key to the modernization lies at the liberty of mind and all-embracing.
