Objective To understand the knowledge about and attitude towards HIV/AIDS among students in a medical school. Methods A self-designed questionnaire was administered to 2 156 students. Results The correct answer rate to the number of people with HIV infection was 10. 6 %. About 91.7 %, 92. 8 %, and 87.6 % of the students knew the three major transmission routes of HIV/ AIDS: sexual transmission, blood transmission, mother to child transmission, respectively. About 56.3 % of the students thought that HIV could be transmitted by shaking hands, hugging, or kissing. About 68. 4 % and 40. 6 % of the students believed that using condoms and disposable needles and syringes, respectively, could prevent HIV infection. Around 76.9 % of the students correctly responded to AIDS treatment-related question. About 62.4 % of the students could maintain a correct attitude towards a person with HIV/AIDS in public places, but only 37.8 % of the students were willing to work with people with HIV/AIDS. Among those who did not want to work with people with HIV/AIDS, 34. 3 % quoted the fear of being infected as the reason. Conclusion More educational efforts are needed to improve the knowledge about and attitude towards HIV/AIDS among medical students.
