Freshman QIN Dahe was paging through an issue of Acta Geographica Sinica in the library of Geology and Geography Department, Lanzhou University in 1965 when his eyes were suddenly caught by an article. It was a paper on fundamental features of glaciers in China written by SHI Yafeng and XIE Zichu, pioneers of Chinese glaciology. Back in high school Qin had read about Shi's heroic investigation on the 8012m-high Mount Xixiabangma at central Himalayas, so he set to read the article carefully.
