He attended Northwest Normal University in Lanzhou, receiving the BSc in geography in 1993, and also a Graduate Certificate in Human Geography in 1996 at Northwest Normal University. He completed his education at East China Normal University, where he received a PhD in cartology and geographical information system in Shanghai in 2004.
