The last few years have seen Chinese shipyards significantly expand their prominence in the industry, and bulk carrier contracting in particular has attracted attention. In the first ten months of 2009, Chinese shipbuilders reported 142 orders of which 90 were for new bulk carriers, equating to 74.4% of the 121 bulk carriers contracted worldwide. Over the past decade, Chinese shipbuilders have emerged as a major builder of bulk carriers, and have steadily increased their share of the global market. Before 2003, Chinese shipbuilders took in less than 1m CGT worth of bulk carrier newbuilding orders on a yearly basis, and accounted for less than 15% of bulk carrier orders placed globally. However, over the course of the subsequent four years, this market share recorded a threefold increase to stand at 52.3% in 2007 (in CGT terms).
