Most American Vietnam War narratives belong to Bakhtin's monologue novels, in which the authors fail to get out of their self-consciousness and to have a dialogue with the characters. The characters' consciousness is put in the frame of the authors' consciousness that determines the behaviors of the Vietnamese they describe. This monologue prevents the American writers from reaching a complete and clear understanding of themselves and American culture. Due to the identicalness between the authors and the characters, these Vietnam War narratives can hardly reach an artistic height. However, some American Vietnam War writers, though puzzled by the Vietnamese, express their wish to engage in dialogue. In their efforts to understand the Vietnamese, they also achieve a better understanding of themselves.
