摘要
本文基于近百年来包括Stffel、Bolinger、Quirk、Labov等数十位学者的英语强调词研究成果,首先分析了英语强调词的不同定义、分类及其多样性和可变性之特点,然后探讨了英语强调词的主要研究方面及特点,即:近百年来英语强调词的语义和语法化研究详尽、系统;而其语用研究则在近20年里才开始涉及,亟待深入研究;其二语习得研究在近10年里开始迅速发展,且均以语料库为基础。英语强调词研究表现为三大趋势:1)研究对象从单纯书面语向口语转变;2)研究领域从单纯的句法结构、语义、搭配研究向语用学、二语习得研究转变;3)研究方法从定性分析转而以语料库为基础的定量和定性分析。语料库语言学的迅速发展必将为英语强调词研究增添更广阔的动态研究空间。
As an overview of century-long studies of English intensifiers by over 30 scholars including Stoffel, Bolinger, Quirk, and Labor, this paper analyzes various definitions and classifications of English intensifiers, and their main characteristics, namely, changeability and versatility. A review of literature shows that while studies on semantics of English intensifiers have been carried on and bloomed throughout the century, research in pragmatics in the same field started only 20 years ago with limited scope. So a more specific and more systemic framework of pragmatic intensification is yet to be explored. Moreover, SLA studies on English intensifiers, all corpus-based, were initiated just 10 years ago and yet have flourished ever since. Three research tendencies of English intensifiers are thus suggested: 1) Oral English instead of written English is becoming the major research subject; 2)There is a shift in research dimensions from syntactic, semantic, and collocation studies to pragmatic and SLA studies; and 3) In terms of research methods, qualitative studies are giving way to corpus-based studies involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Surely, the boom of corpus linguistics promises to offer ample and dynamic scope for the study on English intensifiers.
