The effects of Cr 3+ content in CrF 3/AlF 3 catalysts on activity for synthesis of HF 134a from reaction of HCFC 133a with HF were investigated. FTIR, EPR and XPS have been employed to characterize the CrF 3/AlF 3 catalysts. The results show that CrF 3 existed in a monolayer dispersion where the interaction between CrF 3 and AlF 3 support became stronger when Cr 3+ content less than 1%. The CrF 3/AlF 3 catalyst with 0.1% Cr 3+ exhibits the highest turnover frequency. The residual oxygen in the catalyst forms surface active species of CrAlO m F n from the interaction of CrF 3 and AlF 3, which is the cause of high selectivity to HFC 134a in F/Cl exchange reaction.
