Experimental brain ischemia model was prepared by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) operation in rabbits. Effects of atropine(Atr) on Ca^2+, Na^+, K^+,H_2O contents of ischemic area were examined 5 h after MCAO. Atr 0.7 mg·kg1·h1, iv, 5 min after MCAO for 5 h significantly reduced Ca2+ accumulation, Na+ level and H2O content in ischemic area (P<0.01). Atr 0.35 mg·kg1·h1 iv for 5 h after MCAO also reduced Na+ contents in ischemic area (P<0.05). The results suggest that Atr protect regional brain ischemia infarct and edema in rabbits.
