Abstract It is well known that ATP increase energy supply of cells. Recently, it has been reported that extracellular ATP also exert diverse biological functions, including regulate cardiac and renal function, vasoactivity, aggregation of platelet, release of neurotransmitter, etc. This review briefly discussed about the source of extracellular ATP, its metabolic process cross cell membrane, purinergic receptors, and biological effects of extracellular ATP in different type of organs and cells.
