Objective To explore the association between psychological reaction and road traffic accidents (RTA) among middle school students, and to seek out some new clues for prevention and control on RTAs for this population. Methods Cases consisted of 116 students who had encounted RTA from 2005 -01 -01 to 2005 - 12 -31. Controls were 116 students from the same class of the cases and matched by age and gender. Basic information, psychological reaction ability including speed anticipation, discrimination reaction and action judgment of these children were collected, measured and analyzed. Results The average time of speed anticipation was significantly longer and its qualified rate was significantly lower in the eases than in their compared controls. The mean total number of improper operation was significantly more in the cases than in the controls in action judgment detection, while no significant differences were found in qualified rate and in discrimination reaction measurement. Univariate and multivariate conditional Logistic regression analysis showed that speed anticipation (underestimating speed) was a main risk factor for RTAs. Conclusion Poor ability in speed anticipation leads to RTAs in middle school students to a certain extent.
