Yang Yuyi is one of the leading writers of the new period prose in Guangdong province. In his over 30-year-long literary career, he has published 17 collections of prose. His early works were partly for the children readers and partly "local colour" prose describing the native customs, manners and feelings of the South of the Five Ridges. Generally speaking, those works followed Yang Shuo's style of writing to sing in the sweet and beautiful poetic language the praises of the happy life in the new period. In the early 1980s, Yang Yuyi plunged twice into the thick of life to enrich his literary creations, and as a result he began to pay more attention to the spiritual exploration and the characteristic temper of the time. His three "perilous" vagrancies in particular have broadened his vision, and he is consciously trying to guide his readers to a profound rethinking of history, society and life in the clash between history and reality. Sympathetic and detached, he has refined his prose creation with that tragic beauty of historical grandeur and solemnity.
