嘉靖、隆庆五十年,是明王朝从盛世走向没落的转折点。生活在这一时期的松江士人,虽然依旧诗酒唱和、听琴观曲、游山玩水,但士人素有的历史忧患意识和强烈的现实关怀精神,使他们难以超脱历史的羁绊。以至于他们心忧天下,经世致用。身在朝野,服务于国家;闲处乡间,造福于桑梓。同时,他们又嗜好藏书,家藏万卷,经史子集、鼎彝书画无所不窥,以致博学多才,著述等身。之后的书画大家董其昌,科学巨匠徐光启,明诗殿军陈子龙、千古奇童夏完淳无不在他们的肩膀上攀上各自领域的巅峰,犹如一颗颗璀璨的明珠光耀千古,续写着松江在明代的辉煌。
