AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of combined use of rh - bFGF, CPC and medical collagen membrane compounds on regeneration of the rabbit periodontal tissue. METHODS : Sixteen rabbits were selected and bone defect of 3.5mm × 2.5mm × 2mm in “U” size was created in the distal area of the bilateral middle incisors of the mandible. As to the restoration methods, rh - bFGF and CPC compounds were implanted in the bone defect area in the group 1 and only the CPC was implanted in the group 2, which were both overlaid with the collagen membrane. There was only collagen membrane overlaying in the bone defect area in the control group. The therapeutic results were evaluated by clinical and imaging examination as well as histological index. SPSS13.0 software package was used for ANOVA. RESULTS : 8 weeks after operation, there were various amounts of newly formed alveolar bone, cement and connective tissues in the dental defect of “U” size in all three groups. There was significant difference in alveolar osteogenesis between the control group and the 2 experimental groups. The difference was also significant between the two ex- perimental groups (P 〈 0.01 ). CONCLUSION: Application of rh- bFGF/CPC compounds is beneficial to the regeneration of the alveolar bone and avoid the side effects such as root resorption and bone malunion, which often occur after the conventional periodontal regenerative therapy.
