Two American writers, Tom Wolfe and Jonathan Franzen, each published a voluminous novel recently in response to their respective literary “manifestos” calling for “social novels”. This paper, by associating the authors' literary ideas and placing the two novels in the historical and contemporary literary context, attempts to offer a fuller understanding of the voice of revolt in contemporary American literature.
