The Swallow Knows, a collection of poems and essays, is a milestone in the career of Yu Pingbo as a modem Chinese writer. It is a combination of the traditional and the modem, and of the classical and the vernacular. In terms of the theme, the collection, which is based on the author＇s life in Hangzhou, betrays between the lines a sentimental recollection of his elderly relatives and friends, and a boundless nostalgia for his happy family. For the author, West Lake is not only his spiritual abode, but also his emotional home. While the author＇s unique way of describing dreams adds a misty hue to the work.
