Objective To investigate the application of piece meal grafting of the residual nail bed to cover the de.feet of nail matrix. Methods Sixteen cases with 18 nail matrix defects were involved. A piece of the remaining nail bed from the injured finger was harvested and cut into small pieces. These nail bed pieces were evenly distributed and grafted to the area of defect. Pressure dressing was applied to the grafting area for 2 weeks and then removed along with stitch removal. Results All the nail bed grafts survived in the 18 fingers of 16 cases. Defect in the center of the nail matrix with phalanx exposure was seen in 2 fingers. This was healed after dressing change. The patients were followed up for a period of 8 to 21 months. Sixteen of the 18 fingers had good results (88.9%), while 2 fingers (11.1%) had poor results. Overall the patients were satisfactory with the appearance of their nails. Conclusion Piece meal grafting of the residual nail bed solved the problem of donor nail matrix material. It is a simple and reliable procedure that can be easily popularized.
