Objective To develop and evaluate the Turnout Psychological Scale (TP). Methods A self-report questionnaire was developed with structured methods. A total of 639 cancer patients were asked to complete the questionnaire and evaluate the importance of each item. And 129 relatives and 103 doctors and nurses were also asked to evaluate the importance of each item. The questionnaire was refined and its reliability and validity were evaluated. 706 healthy people whose demographics were similar with patients were asked to complete the scale and the results were compared with the patients' results. Results 1. TP was finally refined as a scale with 39-item, 4 dimensions including cognition, personality, emotion and unconscious. 2. The scale had good content validity and it can well reflect the psychological characteristics of cancer patients. Its construct was consistent with the concept designed. The criterion validity with Cancer Behaviors was 0.76. The 4 dimensions and the total score of the patients were significantly different from healthy people' s scores. This shows that the scale has high differ- ential validity. 3. The test-retest coefficients for the 4 dimensions and the total score was 0.80, 0.76, 0.78, 0.82 and 0.83 respectively; Cronbach α was 0.78, 0.82, 0.93, 0.80 and 0.88 respectively. The split-half reliability for the scale was 0.89. Conclusion TP has high validity and reliability. It is applicable in clinical practice.
